About Blepharoplasty
Lower Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)
We have always considered the eyes to be the key to the face. When skin on the upper eyelid becomes loose and wrinkled and sometimes bad enough to actually rest on the eyelashes, an upper Blepharoplasty is performed.
This may be performed along with a forehead lift, if necessary. Often it is done as a separate operation. A very fine scar, which falls into the natural fold on the upper eyelid, is the result. This operation is almost totally painless in its aftercare, and the stitches are always dissolving stitches which melt within a week. The results of this operation are usually described by patients as creating a bright, alert look. If this operation is performed separately, most patients are back at work and resuming a full schedule within a matter of days to a week.
Lower Blepharoplasty
The most common complaint on the lower eyelid is fat pockets or bulges that gives one the appearance of being chronically tired. This will often appear in a very young face and tends to be a family trait. The next most common complaints are fine wrinkles and then heavier wrinkles appearing on the lower eyelids.
Today's surgery for removal of fat pockets is performed with no scar whatsoever. The fat pocket is removed from the inside and, if there is any skin excess, it is removed by laser resurfacing, which causes a significant shrinkage of the skin. Fine lines and even most coarse lines are dramatically improved by laser resurfacing, thereby eliminating the need for a surgical scar. It's extremely rare in one's life to have this operation performed more than once. It is not at all unusual to see patients in their twenties and thirties having this operation done, both male and female.
