Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) offered in New Jersey

We have all seen the late night infomercials, showing the woman using an electrical stimulation device on her face.  We then cut to the before and after photo, which looks too good to be true.  Sounds a little hokey doesn’t it.  Well guess what. It actually DOES work.  The only problem is that you are right about the pictures; they are too good to be true.  The concept of building the facial muscles works.  At least in our office it does.  We will not be able to show results that good, but in the properly chosen patient, there can be significant improvement.  How does this all happen you say.

The face is a mass and network of muscles, most working in an upward direction.  In the young face, these muscles all have tone and bulk that is normally associated with muscles in the young.  As we age, not only does the skin loosen, but because we do not actually ever use many of the facial muscles, they start to loose bulk and can no longer help hold up the skin of the face, and they start to lengthen.  This is obviously only a part of the aging process in the face.  When we do a facelift operation today, part of the operation is to tighten, or shorten the ligaments in the face that support the muscles.  Why not build the muscles and get something of a lift, and avoid the surgery.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation in New Jersey performed at Baxt Cosmedical

For many years, physical therapy has utilized this technique of electrical muscle stimulation for other physical problem associated with weakened muscles.  We have been able to modify the "medical grade" EMS machines for use on the facial muscles.  In two, or preferable three sessions a week, taking about one half hour per session, with our very specially trained technicians, we can strengthen and there by shorten, facial muscles.  This goes on for several months, or until change becomes apparent.  We then ask patients to come back for a session every other month.  Some patients are then switched to a portable mini-version, of the large machine for home use.

The results are very real but subtle at the same time.  The younger patient will find this particularly appealing as a non-surgical alternative.  EMS along with Photofacial treatments, a non-laser method of creating new collagen in the sub dermal layer, skin resurfacing with our Dermasalt peels, and we plastic surgeons had better start rethinking the "facelift" before it becomes obsolete.
