As a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon with a long history of performing facelifts, it is a thrill to introduce the barbed threads technique to my patients.

Contour Threads™,Featherlift™,Threadlift™ are techniques that involve the insertion of 'barbed' surgical threads beneath the skin using needles, therefore eliminating the scars and the risks of open facelift surgery. The barbs are almost invisible to the naked eye but once they are inserted, they open in an umbrella fashion creating a firm hold on the deep tissues. As of 2005, the Contour Threads™ are the only non-absorbable barbed suture cleared by the FDA for the elevation and fixation of midface, brow and neck areas.

The barbed thread technique involves either local anesthesia or light sedation with the insertion of the threads in the face, neck and/or jaw line. These are the same threads we would use in the traditional open facelift operation to lift the deep tissues. There are no visible scars and the side effects are minimal; short term bruising, swelling and rare infection. This is ideal for the younger to middle aged patient with early to moderate facial laxity. It offers not only the tightening of the skin but also a lifting and repositioning of the soft tissue in the face creating a fuller, 'higher' look. The barbed thread procedure can be combined with numerous other procedures such as filler injections using either the patients own fat or the newer, approved filler materials. Chin augmentation, liposuction of the neck, facial peels or laser resurfacing are just some of the other procedures that can be done in conjunction with the barbed thread procedure.

Keep in mind that it is important to find someone who is experienced in not only the barbed thread procedure, but other facial surgery procedures as well. The barbed thread procedure is being offered by many non-medical, even non-physician facilities that perform it on patients with unrealistic expectations of what it can accomplish. As a board certified plastic surgeon with a lifetime of facial cosmetic surgery, I will honestly tell you whether the barbed thread procedure will provide the results you desire and expect.
