What is Sclerotherapy?
Veins of the leg are a common problem. Many people who have spider veins find them unsightly and often attempt to conceal them. Today, a simple treatment, called sclerotherapy, used effectively by our doctors improves the unwanted spider veins of the legs.
How does it work?
During sclerotherapy, a solution is injected into the unwanted veins, damaging the vessel. Sclerotherapy is the gold standard of care for spider leg veins, however some patients can benefit from laser leg vein therapy which we also offer in our office.
What causes spider veins?
Spider veins are caused by incompetent veins in the legs, the blood does not get pumped back up to the heart as effectively, and blood pools and spider veins grow and get filled up. Spider veins tend to be worse in pregnancy and for people who are on their feet all day such as health care workers or restaurant or retail workers. There can be a genetic component and they often run in families.
What to expect during sclerotherapy treatment
Sclerotherapy is performed in an easy office visit. It is performed in an easy office visit. We recommend loose clothing and no body lotion the day of the treatment. The veins will be injected with a sclerosing solution and then pressure taped for 24 hours.

What to expect after treatment
The veins can look worse before they get better as the injections can cause redness and swelling. Rarely there can be hyperpigmentation as the veins are healing, so we recommend to avoid sun exposure, and best to do the treatments in the fall winter or spring.
How soon After Treatment will I see results?
After sclerotherapy treatment, patients typically see results about 4-6 weeks later*.
How many treatments are needed to treat the area?
Depending on the severity of the veins, it can be anywhere from 1-5 treatments. On average, most patients do 2-3 treatments.

How long do the results last?
Results can last years, but the veins can grow back and people can grow new ones, so we recommend once a year maintenance for most of our patients*.
