What Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a common condition in which men develop excess tissue in the breast. For most men with gynecomastia, the breasts simply contain fat deposits. Gynecomastia is commonly referred to as “man-boobs.” Gynecomastia does not necessarily mean that a man has excess fat deposits from being overweight. No matter how much weight you lose or exercise you do, a man with gynecomastia will NOT reduce the excess breast tissue.
What Causes Excess Breast Tissue in Males?
The board certified plastic surgeons at BAXT CosMedical® explain to their gynecomastia patients that an imbalance occurs with the sex hormones, testosterone and estrogen. Simply stated, estrogen, the “female” hormone, stimulates the growth of breast tissue, while the “male” hormone, testosterone, stops estrogen from making breast tissue.
While males and females have both sex hormones, the ratio of testosterone is higher in men and estrogen levels are higher in females. Unfortunately, men with gynecomastia have an imbalance causing their breast tissue to grow.
How is Gynecomastia Treated?
Now more than ever, men and women are taking advantage of sophisticated liposuction techniques and “scar-less” breast reduction surgery**.

Liposuction for Excess Male Breast Tissue
At BAXT CosMedical®, fat removal with liposuction is a very effective treatment for men with ‘fatty’ gynecomastia only. Liposuction is an aesthetic (cosmetic) procedure designed to remove excess fat deposits. For men with ’fatty’ gynecomastia, our board certified plastic surgeons target the excess breast tissue fat deposits for careful removal.
Liposuction is a safe and effective fat reduction and body contouring surgical procedure that has been available for approximately 30+ years. Throughout the years, liposuction equipment and techniques have continued to be refined. To learn more about how liposuction is performed at BAXT CosMedical®, click here.
Surgical Breast Reduction for Gynecomastia
In most men, however, the breasts contain a combination of fat and glandular tissue. These men have a more difficult case of gynecomastia and surgical tissue excision is recommended to achieve the best results.
Liposuction is less effective in these cases because the procedure cannot remove glandular tissue. In these cases, our plastic surgeons recommend surgical breast reduction surgery. This approach allows the surgeons to remove a larger amount of the glandular tissue and/or excess skin.
BAXT CosMedical®'s plastic surgeons will discuss where the surgical incision will be made but is typically located in most gynecomastia patients around the edge of the areola. Our board certified plastic surgeons use the utmost care and skill to “hide” the resulting scars.

For those men with excess fat and glandular tissue surgery is required. Many surgeons treat this type of gynecomastia by making large incisions to remove the glandular tissue, often causing unsightly scarring around the areola.
At BAXT CosMedical®, Dr. Sherwood Baxt introduced the "scar-less" breast reduction several years ago**. We utilize state-of-the-art technology for this remarkable procedure, which allows us to break up hard glandular tissue through a special ‘microexcisional tool’ and remove it through the suction cannula used to perform liposuction.
For patients that have excessive skin, the procedure can also include skin excision through an incision around the areola. This may be performed during the first surgery or in a second surgery for patients that do not achieve enough skin tightening.
This revolutionary “scar-less” breast reduction procedure takes approximately one hour.* Our patients are given a local or twilight anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Most "scar-less" male breast reduction patients recover within 24 to 48 hours**.
We look forward to discussing this life-altering procedure with our potential patients.
