Meet Dr. Sherwood Baxt and Dr. Saida Baxt
Dr. Sherwood Baxt grew up in Brooklyn New York and was the first in his family to go away from home for college. He attended Tufts University majoring in biology. Dr. Saida Baxt grew up in Staten Island, New York and went on to Bennington College in Vermont where she also majored in biology. How remarkable that they both decided to go to medical school at New York University (NYU) where they met and fell in love on their first date! As the story goes, Sherwood talked Saida, out of studying for a physiology exam, to go to a party where he proposed. Saida remarks to this day that yes, it sounds crazy but it’s true! The couple has been married for over 50 years.
Both continued their medical education. Dr. Sherwood Baxt completed his residency in General Surgery at NYU, and then Plastic Surgery at Mount Sinai in New York. Dr. Saida Baxt pursued an internship in Pediatrics at Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, and then Dermatology residency at Downstate Medical Center, also in Brooklyn, NY. Saida recalls that during the time she was interviewing for residency, many of the chairmen of the departments told her they were not taking any women for training, and one even said why – because the last one got pregnant. That was not an answer Saida could or would accept.

The couple decided to move to New Jersey where Sherwood started his practice by covering 9 emergency rooms and fixing traumatic injuries of the face and hands. Over time, plastic surgery became more of a cosmetic field and he started doing more cosmetic surgeries. This was a trend Saida also noticed in dermatology and the couple decided to start a combined plastic surgery and dermatology office in Paramus, NJ, called BAXT CosMedical®.
The doctors were each able to specialize in their own medical/surgical specialty while sharing patients, giving patients a one stop shop experience, and full service for all their needs. The couple also opened one of the first office-based surgery centers in the state of New Jersey way before they became as popular as they are today. The personalized care and attention provided by the doctors was exemplified in their slogan, “Let our Family Treat Your Family.”
Rebecca grew up watching her parents practice medicine and run BAXT CosMedical® but she didn’t think she wanted to purse medicine. Rebecca completed her English degree at the University of Pennsylvania, but she found that she also liked Biology, and she decided to finish her pre-med requirements just in case she wanted to become a doctor.
Once Rebecca decided upon Dermatology as her medical specialty, she finished her residency at New York University where she was appointed as chief resident. Rebecca began her career working part time in New York, as well as for her parents at BAXT CosMedical® in New Jersey. In 2000 she decided to join them and the rest is history!
With the retirement of her parents, Dr. Rebecca Baxt is thrilled to continue her mother and father’s legacy. She is committed to preserving their tradition of providing high quality care and personalized attention to patients. It is a privilege to be able to continue to treat families over many generations.
Dr. Sherwood Baxt and Dr. Saida Baxt are enjoying their retirement and spending time with family, their four grandchildren and their dog, horses and other animals at their farm.
