Eczema is one of the most common skin conditions treated by dermatologists. Often patients confuse eczema with other common skin conditions, such as contact/allergic dermatitis or psoriasis. As board-certified dermatologists, Dr. Rebecca Baxt and Dr. Saida Baxt are specially trained to diagnose and treat skin disorders and conditions.
Eczema is particularly common in children, but affects people of all ages. Eczema is characterized where patches of skin become inflamed, red, flaky and very itchy. Common eczema body locations include the crease of the arm or behind the knee, but eczema can occur anywhere!
There are a variety of reasons that your skin may experience outbreaks or irritations. A consultation with Dr. Rebecca Baxt and Dr. Saida Baxt is recommended to pinpoint a specific diagnosis and recommend a treatment protocol.
WHAT ARE SOME CAUSES OF ECZEMA AND HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED?
Unfortunately, the specific cause(s) of eczema remains unknown. However, dermatologists understand it to be due to a variety of combinations of genetics and environmental factors. For example, children are more likely to develop eczema if a parent has it. Environmental triggers include:
- Skincare products (soaps, shampoos) act as an irritant
- Cleaning products (detergents, disinfectants) act as an irritant
- Allergens can trigger eczema outbreak (pets, mites, mold)
- Bacteria and certain fungi
- Foods (dairy, eggs, nuts, juices from fresh fruit, wheat and other food items)
- Temperature extremes
- Stress
- Hormones
As there is no one test that is used by dermatologists to diagnose eczema, it is important to have a complete family and health history and physical examination to properly diagnose and treat eczema.
HOW IS ECZEMA TREATED?
Eczema patients are told that there is NO cure for this skin condition. For some individuals eczema is a life-long condition but it can be controlled. Eczema is best treated with a good skin care routine to prevent dryness. Dr. Rebecca Baxt and Dr. Saida Baxt may prescribe creams or medications to help reduce the rash and symptoms. An ongoing treatment plan is needed after inflamed areas of the skin have healed.
