Moles are one of the most common lesions evaluated by dermatologists. Almost all adults have moles. Moles can be congenital (from birth) or more commonly seen as people age. It is important to monitor the growth, size, and shape of your moles. Moles can be benign but they can also be dysplastic (atypical). Atypical moles are of concern as they are a marker for increased risk of skin cancer. A type of skin cancer (melanoma) can grow around or in a mole. Atypical moles must be followed very closely by a dermatologist!
Diagnosed and treated early, melanoma can be cured! Checking your skin and moles can help you diagnose melanoma early. At BAXT CosMedical®, Dr. Rebecca Baxt and Dr. Saida Baxt offer all of their patients a yearly, or more often if necessary, melanoma (skin cancer) screening. Consult with a board-certified dermatologist to learn how to examine your skin.
WHAT ARE SOME COMMON CHARACTERISTICS OF MOLES?
Dr. Rebecca Baxt and Dr. Saida Baxt advise patients that moles exhibit the following traits:
- Color (black, red, tan, blue, skin-toned or colorless)
- Shape (round)
- Raised or flat
- Looks the same (no changes in the color, shape or dimension)
The moles on your body do differ in size, color, and shape and appear anywhere on the skin. The aforementioned traits are normal BUT if you see a mole that has changed, immediately consult with a dermatologist! Familiarize yourself with the ABCDEs of skin cancer.
WHAT ARE THE ‘ABCDEs’ of MELANOMA?
A – Asymmetry (one side of the mole is different than the other side)
B – Border (irregularity of borders of mole)
C – Color (color is varied on mole)
D – Diameter (skin cancer mole size is greater than the size of a pencil eraser)
E – Evolving (mole is changing)
It is important that you consult with a dermatologist if you notice any of the aforementioned changes in your moles. A yearly skin check is recommended.
HOW DO DERMATOLOGISTS TREAT MOLES?
You may want to have your mole(s) removed if you find them unattractive or if they are bothering you by rubbing against your clothing. Dr. Rebecca Baxt and Dr. Saida Baxt can safely excise your moles for cosmetic reasons. Never attempt to remove a mole yourself! If the mole grows back, it may be a sign of skin cancer.
If the mole is diagnosed as skin cancer, Dr. Rebecca Baxt and Dr. Saida Baxt will recommend a course of treatment. If you would like a professional examination of your skin and moles, schedule a consultation with a BAXT CosMedical® dermatologist. Contact us or call 201-265-1300 today!
