Dr. Rebecca Baxt recommendations to keep you safe!

Dr. Rebecca Baxt, Board Certified Dermatologist
Recent media coverage of fake Botox injections has caused alarm due to recent outbreak of patients reporting hospitalizations in multiple states. Due to the botulism-like illnesses, the CDC is coordinating a multistate outbreak investigation caused by botulinum toxin injections, commonly called Botox.
As many individuals, who follow my advisories and blogs are aware, I have been very vocal about warning consumers about the potentials dangers of receiving cosmetic injections from non-qualified medical specialists. Unfortunately, over the years innocent people develop serious medical problems due to counterfeit medication, including Botox!
The dangers are real as in addition to the CDC, The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) have released official statements in response to the reports of patients being hospitalized for botulism from counterfeit Botox injections.1
BOTOX® Cosmetic is an FDA-approved drug and is a medical procedure best performed by a licensed board-certified dermatologist with expertise in the art of cosmetic medicine and NOT a nurse, physician’s assistant (PA), dentist or other type of non-cosmetic doctor.
Please, please, please always make sure you are getting your BOTOX® Cosmetic injections from qualified medical specialist, such as a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon!
SAFETY CHECKLIST
- Select An Expert Injector
DO NOT get Botox injected at a spa, house party, hair salon, fitness club or other non-medical office. You want a very experienced and professionally trained injector, not someone who takes a weekend course.
- Verify Credentials!
Check the credentials of your injector and make sure they are board-certified in an appropriate specialty; e.g., American Academy of Dermatology, American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

- Do A Product Check
Ask to see the vial that is used. Is it BOTOX® Cosmetic brand name? Make sure you are getting authentic BOTOX® Cosmetic. - Stay Informed
There are other neurotoxin brands that are also safe to use as long as they are purchased legally and used appropriately, such as Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau® and Daxxify®.

- Remember, There Is NO ‘GENERIC’ BOTOX® COSMETIC
“There is no such thing as a ‘generic’ form of BOTOX® Cosmetic. Be wary of discount products or ‘cheap’ BOTOX® Cosmetic. Medical formulations, potency, and approved doses vary among products, so no one product can take the place of another. FDA labeling states that BOTOX® Cosmetic is not interchangeable with any other product. If it doesn’t say BOTOX® Cosmetic on the vial, then it isn’t BOTOX® Cosmetic.” It is not worth your health or your life to save a few dollars for cheap toxin. Be careful!2
At BAXT CosMedical®, we purchase our BOTOX® Cosmetic3 from Allergan Aesthetics directly and store it properly in a monitored refrigerator. Per Dr. Baxt, “all bottles are made/diluted by me, and I am the only one who draws up the BOTOX®, and the only one who injects it!”
