Did you know that excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) is a common disorder affecting both men and women? Individuals with hyperhidrosis produce abnormal amounts of sweat in their extremities, face, and underarms.
For most people, the excessive amount of perspiration is unrelated to their body temperature or exertion. Unfortunately, excessive sweating can negatively affect a person’s activities and contribute to embarrassment.
However, there is no need to suffer in silence or embarrassment. There is help! Dr. Rebecca Baxt, board-certified dermatologist, offers a variety of medical treatments for excessive sweating.
What are Some Excessive Sweating Treatment Options?
Dr. Baxt customizes each treatment for her patients, as the duration of the Brella® Sweat Control Patch application depends on individual tolerance. Treatment times typically range from 1 to 9 minutes.

Drysol™
Dr. Baxt typically begins treatment for hyperhidrosis on a step-by-step basis. Typically, she begins with a prescription topical solution sold exclusively to doctors, called Drysol™. This product contains aluminum chloride which reduces sweat production by blocking the pores. Drysol™ can be used to reduce sweat in the underarms, soles of the feet, and palms.
However, if you have tried this product and are unhappy with the results, schedule your consultation with Dr. Baxt to discuss other hyperhidrosis treatment options.

Qbrexza®
A newer prescription medications is Qbrexza® (glycopyrronium) cloth, 2.4%. Qbrexza® is applied directly to the skin of the armpits (topical) to treat excessive underarm sweating (primary axillary hyperhidrosis) in adults and children aged 9 and older.
Qbrexza® works by blocking the receptors that are responsible for excessive sweating.

Sofdra®
Sofdra™ is a prescription gel that can be applied directly to the underarm area to treat excessive underarm sweating (primary axillary hyperhidrosis) in adults and children aged 9 and older.
Sofdra™ (sofpironium topical gel, 12.45%) works by blocking acetylcholine receptors found on the sweat glands located in the armpit. Since acetylcholine stimulates sweat production, Sofdra™ prevents the stimulation of these receptors and reduces sweating.

BOTOX® (onabotulinumtoxinA)
Many of Dr. Baxt’s patients are surprised to learn that BOTOX® (onabotulinumtoxinA) is an effective treatment for excessive sweating. Dr. Baxt explains that BOTOX® is FDA-approved for underarm sweating and that it works by blocking nerve signals that activate sweat glands, thereby reducing sweat production. Though temporary and more expensive than other hyperhidrosis treatment options, BOTOX® can be highly effective, particularly if other treatments have failed.
Other Treatments*
The aforementioned hyperhidrosis treatments are effective for excessive underarm sweating, but not for other affected areas, such as hands and feet. Here are some other treatment options:
- Iontophoresis: This medical procedure uses an electrical current to deliver medication through the skin into deeper tissues. Iontophoresis works well for treating hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet but is less effective for the underarms.
- miraDry®: This non-surgical treatment uses thermal energy to eliminate sweat and odor glands. However, Dr. Baxt does not offer this treatment.

*UPDATE: Brella® Sweat Control Patch Update – No Longer Available!
In April 2023, The Brella® Sweat Control Patch was initially FDA-cleared for reducing excessive underarm sweating. Dr. Baxt was an early adopter of this innovative topical patch as it was shown to significantly reduce underarm sweating. However, as of “April 20, 2025, Candesant Biomedical, Inc (“Candesant”) filed a Certificate of Dissolution in the State of Delaware and transferred all its assets to a Liquidating Trust (“Trust”). As such, Candesant has ceased to exist, and the Trust is not providing any form of product support for the Brella patch.”1
Due to the discontinuation of this product and no manufacturer support, Dr. Baxt no longer offers this product.
1 Letter received from manufacturer, Candesant’s dissolution of the Brella® Sweat Control Patch.
