Are Glitter Freckles Safe for Your Skin?

The holidays are the perfect time to sparkle…literally! From shimmering lids to dazzling cheekbones and collarbones, glitter has become the ultimate festive accessory. But this year, one trend is again stealing the spotlight: glitter freckles! Taylor Swift first made these glitter freckles makeup patches a viral sensation last year, and after her latest album, The Life of a Showgirl, released, she’s re-popularized the look across TikTok and Instagram with a few behind-the-scenes photos. These dazzling specks are everywhere, from sporting events to night clubs to New Year’s celebrations. “Unsurprisingly, the viral popularity has resulted in Fazit Makeup Patches to become a No. 1 bestseller on Amazon for body glitters.” But before you buy these trending sparkle patches, one question remains: are they safe for your skin?
Most glitter make up patches are made from a blend of non-toxic ingredients, similar to those in temporary tattoos, including Acrylates Copolymer, Cellulose Acetate Butyrate, and Sucrose Acetate Isobutyrate, along with Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil and various glitter particles. These are generally non-toxic ingredients.
Dr. Rebecca Baxt, board-certified dermatologist advises her patients that temporary tattoos and makeup patches such as glitter freckles that use adhesive to stay on the skin generally are safe and not a problem for most people. “But there is a subset of people who are allergic to the ingredients, the dyes and/or the adhesive,” says Dr. Baxt.
Dr. Baxt recommends that it is best to do a patch test of the glitter freckles makeup patches on the inner arm before applying them to the face to make sure they don’t cause an irritation. Make sure to do it a few times before applying to the face. Also, be careful not apply to close the eyes as redness and stinging can occur.
How to Safely Remove Glitter Freckles Makeup Patches?
According to Fazit, they should be removed with either makeup wipes, micellar water, and/or oil-based cleansers. They caution users not to scrub hard and wash gently in a circular motion. Dr. Baxt advises that micellar water or a gentle makeup remover is preferable to makeup wipes.
If you are uncertain or have had a skin reaction, consult with a board-certified dermatologist.
