Reverse Summer Skin Damage? Is It Possible?
Expert Advice from Dr. Rebecca Baxt
As summer is ending this year, perhaps you are noticing skin damage due to sun exposure or exposure to chemicals such as, chlorine in pools and other environmental factors. Despite the amount of sunscreen and other sun protective gear, such as hats and umbrellas, your skin may be showing visible sign of aging and damage.
Some of the damage can be seen as:
- Dark spots
- Fine lines
- Hyperpigmentation
- Wrinkles
- Dry, rough skin
While many individuals will try using anti-aging creams, serums and DIY dermabrasion and light devices, they won’t necessarily see noticeable improvements in their skin. Dr. Rebecca Baxt, a board-certified dermatologist, has years of experience in helping people rejuvenate and renew aging and sun damaged skin. There are many options available but a professional skin consultation with Dr. Baxt is the first step.
What Are The Ways You Can Reduce Sun Damage And Premature Skin Aging?
Dr. Baxt and her aestheticians see many patients presenting with skin discoloration (dyschromia) of various shades of reds and browns. Also, the summer sun has dried out the skin and patient’s complexions look dry and dull.
Dr. Baxt discusses some of the procedures and services available at BAXT CosMedical® that can help!

Professionally administered chemical peels are excellent treatment options to help with skin pigmentation issues, discoloration, uneven skin tone, dull complexion, fine lines, and wrinkles. Not all peels are the same as they vary from superficial to medium to deep peels that use stronger acids. At BAXT CosMedical®, we offer Glycolic Acid Peels which vary in strength, and TCA peels or Trichloroacetic Acid peels, also in different strengths. Dr. Baxt’s favorite chemical peels are Glycolic Acid and TCA. Chemical peels can be performed on all skin colors and type but a consultation with Dr. Baxt is required to determine which peel is best and the strength and frequency needed to achieve the patient’s goal.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
Dr. Rebecca Baxt recommends IPL treatments to her patients who want to improve their skin tone/texture, reduce skin aging from sun and environmental damage, and reduce acne, redness, and hyperpigmentation. Using the Intense Pulsed Light system, Dr. Baxt can dramatically improve the look of sun-damaged skin and patients with persistent redness and flushing of rosacea. Treatments typically take about half an hour, and the slight redness is usually gone by the time you are back in the car. Treatments are usually done every 3 to 6 weeks. After five treatments, many patients are so happy with their results that they elect to do more.

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is technology which combines the precise treatment of topical medications along with a special blue light. PDT is used to treat sun damaged skin, aging skin, acne, and pre-cancerous lesions. A distinct advantage of Photodynamic Therapy is that the affected area can be treated, and the surrounding normal skin is unaffected. Also, Photodynamic Therapy is safe for all skin types and color.

Fraxel® works by creating tiny microtrauma underneath the surface of the skin, and then as the body heals those sites, new collagen grows. Fraxel® Dual has two wavelengths, and it works well for reducing hyper-pigmentation/sun damage, as well as treating scarring (including acne scarring), fine lines, and wrinkles.
Dr. Baxt successfully utilizes laser and light therapies for all skin types and colors, including Clear + Brilliant® which addresses unwanted signs of aging to refresh and renew your skin. Clear+Brilliant is often called a “baby Fraxel”. It is very similar to Fraxel® Laser Resurfacing but at a but at a lower power with less downtime. We also call it “Lite & Bright” since it lightens and brightens the skin.
